| Volunteer Opportunities
WIS is a non-profit organization and offers the rewarding opportunity to volunteer
in the following two major categories:
- Direct student contact
- Limited or no student contact
Direct student contact –
Volunteers may assist in providing appropriate activities for students and offering
care and help to young children. Some of the areas where WIS direct student contact
volunteers may assist include, but not limited to:
- Before class activities
- After class activities
- Recess and snack time
- Preschool circle time assistance
- Small group lesson assistance
One-on-one tutoring
- Summer day camp activities
- Board games, such as chess, go, and Chinese chess
- Phonics
- Reading
Writing
- Math
- Chinese
- Art and crafts
- Chinese Painting
- Chinese Martial Arts
- Dance and creative movement
- Music and songs
- Music instruments (including Chinese instruments)
- Story telling
- Drama
- Photograph
- Field trip driver and chaperone
Limited or no student contact –
Volunteers also provide invaluable support in non-student contact areas.
Some of the areas include, but not limited to:
- Sorting library books
- School work or homework display
- Classroom decoration and organization
- Making copies
- Correcting school work
- Making phone calls
- Organizing parties, especially for holidays
- Data entry
- Maintaining website
- Distributing school information
- Cleaning
- Fund raising
Requirements
We welcome individuals of all backgrounds and abilities. Because of the
nature of service being delivered at WIS, all volunteers are carefully
screened and individually matched with assignments that are well-suited for them.
Age requirements for prospective volunteers:
- At least 14 years of age to volunteer in a non-student area
- At least 16 years of age to have student contact
